Georgia Tech stays alive, beats Eagles
The Atlanta NCAA regional is down to the final game of a best-of-three showdown between Georgia Tech and Southern Mississippi.
Luke Murton became the 10th player in Georgia Tech history to hit 20 homers in a season and the Yellow Jackets beat the Eagles 10-3 on Sunday night.
Murton, Jay Dantzler and Cole Leonida hit homers in the first two innings for Georgia Tech (38-18-1), which won two games Sunday to set up Monday night’s regional final game against Southern Miss. The winner will face Florida in the super regionals.
The Yellow Jackets beat Elon 8-4 in an elimination game earlier Sunday.
Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall said he would start ace Deck McGuire, the Atlantic Coast Conference pitcher of the year and a finalist for the national pitcher of the year award given by the College Baseball Foundation, in Monday night’s final.
Southern Miss coach Corky Palmer sounded less confident about his pitching as he announced plans to start Scott Copeland, who is only 1-5 with a 6.23 ERA.
“We’re going to have to get some help from some people who haven’t pitched very well to win this thing,” Palmer said.
