Jackson: Mayor Johnson, Version 3.0?
Despite a relatively light turnout, voters spoke clearly in support of giving former Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. a third term in office just four years after rejecting his leadership in favor of the late Frank Melton.
Johnson, 62, soundly defeated Ward 6 Councilman Marshand Crisler in Tuesday’s Democratic primary runoff election. Johnson will face Republicans George Lambus and Walter Sloane and independent candidates Robert Amos, David Archie, Charlotte Reeves and Rick Whitlow in the June 2 general election.
While the voters still have choices, the political reality is that winning the Democratic nomination for mayor of Jackson has in modern political history been tantamount to winning the office.
Johnson, the former executive director of the Center for University-based Development at Jackson State University, possesses the education, experience and vision to be an outstanding mayor. Those qualities have never been in doubt.
