Jackson Ward 1 challenger exits race
Jones was running for the Ward 1 seat against incumbent Councilman Jeff Weill in the Republican primary. Because of Mississippi’s closed primary system, voters who cast ballots in that race on May 5 would be unable to vote for one of 10 mayoral candidates on the Democratic ticket.
“We need a new mayor,” said Jones, an emergency medical physician at University of Mississippi Medical Center. “That weighs very heavily on my decision. I think Ward 1 won’t vote for (incumbent Mayor) Frank Melton.”
Jones said he approached some of the mayoral candidates to see if there was someone he believed was worth dropping out of the race. In the end, he said he decided there were several good candidates on the Democratic side, although he would not mention any names.
“I’m not endorsing anybody,” he said.
