DJ: Running every two years, House members keep raising money
North Mississippi’s U.S. Rep. Travis Childers of Booneville can’t stop campaign fundraising.
Like every other House member, he must run for re-election every two years.
As 2009’s first quarter ended, he and his colleagues filed campaign finance reports with the Federal Election Commission.
Of Mississippi’s four House members, Democrat Childers raised the most money in the first quarter – $205,331, with the next highest fundraiser being Rep. Bennie Thompson of Bolton.
Childers reports $182,548 cash on hand after he raised and spent nearly $2 million in 2008 across five different elections to win the seat. He replaced Roger Wicker of Tupelo, who was appointed to and then won the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Trent Lott in late 2007.
Childers’ cash total compares closely to 4th District Rep. Gene Taylor, a longtime member of Congress from Bay St. Louis. Taylor reported his cash on hand at $184,171.
