Hot Corner: Masters will miss Gary Player

It’s time for the azaleas, but here’s what will get lost in the discussion of whether the rain will keep the fertilizer off the soggy Masters ground of Augusta National Golf Club.
While CBS pines for Tiger vs. Phil bringing their Sunday “A” games, Gary Player will make the last of his record 52 appearances. Golf’s grandest gentleman and unofficial world record holder of the most frequent flier miles will make his last round. He won three green jackets, beginning in 1961 and ending in 1978 at the age of 42.
He was at Augusta when President Eisenhower was, going low before Vijay Singh was born. “Last year, I was just standing on the first tee thinking, most of my friends at age 72 are dead and I’m still playing in the Masters,” he said.
