Sheriff backs Crisler for Jackson mayor

Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin announced his endorsement of Democratic mayoral candidate Marshand Crisler this morning.

The announcement comes only days after McMillin stepped down as Jackson Police Chief, saying he could no longer support Mayor Frank Melton’s political aspirations.

“I made the decision to resign because I couldn’t continue to serve in that capacity as chief because I couldn’t support the present mayor,” McMillin said.

If Crisler is elected, McMillin has said that he has not ruled out returning to JPD. Both men said this morning that they have not “dwelled” on that decision.

“He has not asked,” Crisler said. “We have not had that conversation.”

The news conference was held at 10 a.m. at the Capitol rotunda. State Rep. Credell Calhoun also announced his endorsement of Crisler.
