New Jackson police chief, Tyrone Lewis, outlining goals
Tyrone Lewis, Jackson’s new interim police chief spent a large portion of today meeting with media and outlining his goals as chief.
Lewis’ goals this year is reinstating JPD’s reserve and crime prevention units.
JPD had between 50 and 100 reserve officers until the unit was eliminated several months ago. Lewis said renewing the unit could save JPD money on overtime because the reservists are unpaid volunteers.
“They are a critical need when it comes to covering special events, for instance the St. Paddy’s Day Parade downtown or the State Fair. They allow us to provide security without interfering with the operations of the precincts,” Lewis said.
