The city of Jackson is wise just to write off its experiment with traffic cameras as a bad idea, quit collecting fines and move on to more productive traffic enforcement.
Gov. Haley Barbour signed the bill banning the use of traffic cameras, a bill that gained much public support from motorists who complained about accuracy, perceived lack of due process and the fact that private companies were collecting part of the fines from tickets.
Only Jackson and Columbus were using them, but other cities were ready to jump into the lucrative revenue producer.
The lack of cameras, however, should not be a license to run red lights. While there were disputes over whether the cameras prevented accidents, running red lights is a problem and the law should be strictly enforced.
