Senators offer back-to-school sales tax break

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 19, 2009

The Clarion-Ledger, 3/18/9

Legislation that gives tax breaks for back-to-school shoppers advanced Tuesday at the state Capitol, but a bill offering relief to business owners died as a key deadline passed.

Tuesday was the deadline for the House and Senate to decide the fate of money bills that originated in the opposite chamber.

Some measures must clear more hurdles before the 2009 regular legislative session ends next month.

Other bills have been signed into law. Gov. Haley Barbour approved Senate Bill 3281, which allows the state to issue $20 million in bonds and then lend the money to Hinds County for the Old Capitol Green Project.

The project is designed to stretch across 16 downtown blocks in Jackson with retail, office and residential space, along with a movie theater.
