UF President Bernie Machen calls BCS unfair

GAINESVILLE – With his entire body sinking into a lush blue couch, Bernie Machen knows how to be a boss.

His office looms larger than a 20-yard Tim Tebow gain. Between a conference call and the notice of another football player arrest, the University of Florida president soaks it all up with a calculated calm. The glasses come off, the back relaxes, the legs cross and the perspective flies during a 30-minute interview with the Orlando Sentinel about his athletics program.
Mondays can be relentless for Machen, but that Oklahoma hat resting on his mantle — a proud reminder of a winning bet with an old friend — brings a smile to his face. If the Gators had lost the national-title game to the Sooners, Machen would have worn the hat around campus.

“Now I just use it as a trophy,” said Machen with an ear-to-ear smile.
