Stanford has several political ties

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 18, 2009

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 2/18/9

Leaders for Stanford Financial Group and its political action committee haven’t been partial to Democrats or Republicans.

Stanford officials Robert Allen Stanford, James Davis and Laura Pendergest-Holt are under federal investigation, accused of fraud in the sale of about $8 billion of high-yielding CDs held in the firm’s bank in Antigua.

Davis and Pendergest-Holt live in Baldwyn.

Campaign finance records show the giving went in many political directions.

Tupelo’s Republican U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker’s 2008 campaign received $5,000 from the PAC, along with U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat, at $2,500.

From House GOP leader John Boehner to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, they got money from the PAC and from Stanford and Davis.

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign garnered $6,900 in 2008 while the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee raked in $28,500 from Stanford.
