Feds finish case against Melton; his turn Tuesday

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 13, 2009

The Clarion-Ledger, 2/12/9

Federal prosecutors on Thursday wrapped up their case against Mayor Frank Melton and Michael Recio, his former police bodyguard – more than a day earlier than anticipated.

They used their final witnesses to zero in on testimony that the mayor confessed to the raid and had an apparent disregard for the law.

Melton, 59, and Recio, 39, face civil rights charges related to a warrantless, police-style raid on a Jackson duplex in August 2006. Each faces five to 25 years in prison.

Attorneys for Melton and Recio will begin laying out their defense when court resumes at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the courthouse in downtown Jackson. Melton’s attorney, John Reeves, is expected to give his opening statement then.
