We live in a world of celebrity sports owners. It’s Jerry Jones and his new-millennium Taj Mahal, the new Texas stadium that’s a monument to his own ego. It’s Mark Cuban, the little rich boy trying to fit in with the cool kids.
There was George Steinbrenner, making beer commercials that ridiculed his own bombastic nature. There was Ted Turner and his celebrity wife Jane Fonda at the Braves games, along with other A-listers.
That’s why it was again reassuring to see the unassuming gentleman who looks like everybody’s Uncle George take the stage one more time to modestly accept the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday.
