Star witness in Melton trial under attack by attorneys

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 30, 2009

The Clarion-Ledger, 1/30/9

Attorneys in the upcoming trial of Mayor Frank Melton will haggle today over allegations made by a jailed transvestite prostitute against the government’s star witness.

As sensational as it might sound, Mississippi College law professor Matt Steffey said he doubts any of the material will make it to a jury.

“It got a lot of news coverage even though the legal merit seems questionable,” Steffey said. “I think their chances of getting this before the jury on the evidence that has been disclosed so far is very thin.”

The claims were made in a Feb. 27, 2006, interview with Torey Smith, who told the investigators he saw two male prostitutes get into officer Marcus Wright’s car sometime in 2005. Smith said the prostitutes later claimed to have had sex with the officer for money.
