LSU’s receiving corps got a major shot in the arm earlier this week when senior-to-be Brandon LaFell did an about-face and announced he will return for his final season instead of entering the NFL draft.
But the Tigers depth at that position has taken a hit.
Sophomore Ricky Dixon has been released from his scholarship and will transfer to Texas Southern, said his high school coach Larry Dauterive of East St. John.
LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette said he wasn’t aware of Dixon’s transfer and said he was unable to reach coach Les Miles for confirmation.
Dauterive said he had spoken to Dixon several times, as recently as Wednesday morning when Dixon was en route to Houston to finalize the enrollment process at the Southwestern Athletic Conference school.
“I talked to him and he told me that’s what he’s doing,” Dauterive said. “He said he felt like he was too far down on the depth chart at LSU, and with only two years left, he wanted a chance to get on the field a lot quicker at that level. He just wanted a chance to play and he felt like a change of scenery might be something that helped him.”
Calls to Dixon’s cell phone were answered Wednesday, but the person said he wasn’t Dixon. Later calls to the number were not answered.
