Will Gators be too fast for Sooners?
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — There’s fast, and then there’s Florida.
Other college football teams talk about the speed that exists on the roster, but Florida’s speed is blurry fast. And it’s calculated. And it’s balanced, the asset showing up on offense and defense. And it’s planned.
Urban Meyer brought a lot more than a philosophy of how to play the game, especially on offense — his forte — when he arrived from Utah. He also packed an idea, one that has helped lead the Gators to Thursday night’s BCS national championship game at Dolphins Stadium against the Oklahoma Sooners.
“We want the fastest team in the country,” he said during SEC Football Media Days in July in Birmingham. “If you can run fast, we will call you.”
When Meyer and his staff have made the calls to some of the fastest players in the county, those players have been quick to say “yes.” Appearing on Florida’s roster for Thursday’s game will be 12 players who have been clocked at a speed of 4.4 seconds or faster in the 40-yard dash. Seven of those speedsters are on offense and five on defense.
