Mullen anxious to set up foundation at Miss. State
STARKVILLE — Dan Mullen wants everyone to know the spread offense can be different things to different people. But the new Mississippi State football coach offers one basic premise to the approach.
“We’re going to make you defend sideline to sideline,” Mullen said Thursday morning, when he was introduced to a packed house of MSU supporters before meeting with the media for about 45 minutes. “We’re going to take all these great athletes in the state of Mississippi, and try to make you defend them one-on-one in the open field.”
Mullen, 36, has followed Florida coach Urban Meyer from Bowling Green to Utah and finally Gainesville, where the No. 1-ranked Gators are getting ready for the BCS national title game against Oklahoma on Jan. 8 in Miami. Mullen has spent the past four seasons as Florida’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and his expertise in those areas made him an attractive candidate for Mississippi State.
