Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker likely won’t agree with all of Barack Obama’s decisions, but he said Friday he will vote for at least two of the president-elect’s Cabinet picks.
At the Community Development Foundation’s First Friday meeting, Wicker said Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who made an unsuccessful run to be the Democratic presidential nominee, is a “good choice” for secretary of state.
“I intend to vote for her confirmation,” Wicker said, citing her support for free trade and knowledge of international relations. “She understands the U.S.’ role of promoting strength and security.”
Likewise, Wicker said he supports the nomination of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson for secretary of Commerce. Richardson, too, ran for the Democratic presidential ticket.
“I served with him in the U.S. House of Representatives, and he’s an excellent choice,” Wicker said. “I think it’s a good opportunity for Democrats to show they support free and fair trade and that … we can’t start erecting artificial trade barriers.”
