Vote to issue bonds paves way for street repairs

Beginning in March, some cracked, bumpy and deteriorating streets around the city of Jackson finally will be repaved.

The Jackson City Council on Tuesday agreed to take out a 15-year bond worth about $27 million to improve streets. The bond issue will more than double the amount of money the city has spent on street resurfacing projects since 1997.

Thelman Boyd, the public works director, said the city has not decided which streets will be repaved. He said a portion of the money also may help repair city bridges.

Boyd told council members he will bring his recommendations to the council in coming weeks. The bond money should be in the city’s bank account by January.
