Greg Byrne to take on recruiting role directly

Byrne is doing his best to keep Croom’s foundation intact.

He took a test Saturday to become an NCAA-certified recruiter and will be calling the Bulldogs’ high school commitments starting today, which is the first day of an open period for recruiters to speak with prospects.

Such hands-on involvement by Byrne not surprising. Shortly after being hired in February, he took the reins of the baseball coaching search, bringing in John Cohen from Kentucky over the objections of former coach Ron Polk, who preferred longtime assistant Tommy Raf
