OXFORD — It would be hard to find a bigger fan of diminutive Ole Miss receiver Dexter McCluster than Houston Nutt. That’s why the mere mention of the junior’s struggles brings a pained expression to the coach’s face.
In Nutt’s eyes, not only does McCluster possess the physical talent of a good football player, he also has the intangibles that can’t be taught. Things like heart. Character. A sense of responsibility. Respect from his teammates.
“Boy, it’s hard to set a guy down like that,” Nutt said.
But after McCluster committed two more crucial turnovers during Saturday’s 24-20 loss to No. 2-ranked Alabama, the trend is becoming more and more clear. No matter how much Nutt likes McCluster personally, he’s starting to become a liability because of the turnover tendency.
