High court candidate touts timely opinions

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 21, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 10/21/8

Mississippi Chief Justice Jim Smith touts as his accomplishments the 976 majority opinions he has written and that the Supreme Court, under his leadership, has never missed a deadline in issuing an opinion.

“I don’t know of any single Supreme Court in the country that can say that,” Smith said of meeting opinion deadlines.

Smith is seeking re-election in the November general election for another eight-year term on the nine-member court.

Smith appeared Monday before The Clarion-Ledger editorial board.

His primary opposition in the Nov. 4 election is veteran Crystal Springs lawyer Jim Kitchens. Former Chancery Judge Ceola James of Vicksburg also is in the race.
