Supreme Court race goes on

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 20, 2008

The Sun Herald, 10/18/8

Supreme Court challenger Randy “Bubba” Pierce has raised more than double the campaign funds of incumbent Justice Oliver Diaz Jr., according to the latest campaign contribution reports.

Since 2000, Supreme Court races have featured big-money tussles between business interests and their attorneys on one side and the lawyers who sue them on the other. Diaz continues to be supported by attorneys who represent people against corporations, while Pierce is the candidate preferred by business.

By Oct. 10, Pierce had raised a total of $298,033.70, compared to $128,740.50 for Diaz. Pierce has spent almost $190,000, while Diaz reports spending almost $70,000.

Both candidates say they abide by judicial rules that prohibit them from studying who contributes or how much they give, leaving that information to campaign workers.
