MSU 17, VANDERBILT 14

MSU 17, VANDERBILT 14

– The Good: It was a win. That’s all Mississippi State wanted after losing to every Division I-A team it had faced so far. The Bulldogs (2-4, 1-2 SEC) did it with a suffocating defense and got just enough from the offense.
Vanderbilt had only 107 total yards, seven first downs, and suffered three sacks. The Commodores went three-and-out on their first three possessions and had only one long scoring drive.
As for MSU’s offense, it had only 247 yards but got 107 from tailback Anthony Dixon; converted 9 of 18 on third downs; and committed zero turnovers.

– The Bad: The offense still has issues. See: the total yardage, some poor throws by quarterback Tyson Lee, substandard pass protection, and two fumbles (Vandy recovered neither).

It was nice to see MSU run 72 plays -to Vanderbilt’s 46 – and win the time-of-possession battle (36:12 to 23:48), but those numbers should have translated into more points.
