Fortification Street moved closer Tuesday night to getting a long-sought makeover when the Jackson City Council voted 5-1 in favor of a new street design.
The plan will narrow portions of the four-lane road as well as repave the street and replace utility lines.
The lead engineers called the vote “huge” in their effort to start work on the 1 1/2-year project next spring. The project has been in the works for about six years.
“The people who are vested in this, who live there and work there, have overwhelmingly come on board,” Councilwoman Margaret Barrett-Simon said.
