Mississippi has seen plant closures, decreases in home sales and record numbers of subprime loans, but officials say the economy here isn’t as bad as in other areas of the country.
Republican Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama will be debating foreign policy and homeland security issues when they take the stage at the University of Mississippi’s Gertrude Ford Center here Friday night, but the U.S. economy likely will be the issue on many voters’ minds.
Escalating gas prices, plunging stocks and rising foreclosures have thrust the nation’s struggling economy into the forefront of the presidential election.
Both candidates were discussing the economy at campaign stops Monday. People here and across the state also were talking about the U.S. financial system.
