Commentary: Meyer channels Spurrier in win over ‘Canes
GAINESVILLE — All the postgame comments about Miami’s talent and potential were nice and polite Saturday night, which shows that Urban Meyer still has a little way to go in completely channeling the spirit of former Florida coach Steve Spurrier.
The other stuff he’s already mastered, like the uncommon stubborness with making all those fast and fanciful ballplays work, and the mean streak in tweaking major rivals, too.
Did you see Florida’s last possession, the one that started on the Hurricanes’ 16-yard line with a 23-3 Gator lead in Meyer’s back pocket and less than two minutes to play?First came a screen pass from Tim Tebow to Brandon James, then a fade into the end zone that Louis Murphy couldn’t quite pull down. Eventually, with the crowd still howling for more, Meyer sent out the field-goal team to tack on three more points against a Hurricanes team that won 41-16 the last time it came to The Swamp.
What did Miami coach Randy Shannon think of Florida’s finishing kick?”No comment,” Shannon said, leaving no doubt that there was plenty to say, and plenty that will be said by Miami fans between now and the two teams’ next meeting in 2013 about the recurring theme of Gator greed.
