Don’t sweat delay: Coordinators finally ink contracts
AUBURN —
Tony Franklin agreed to his contract at Troy University a few years ago with an e-mail and a handshake. Things were a bit more time consuming to get all the details worked out at Auburn.
Franklin, Auburn’s new offensive coordinator, and Paul Rhoads, the Tigers’ new defensive coordinator, each took more than six months to sign their new deals, which were finalized on Aug. 11. There wasn’t a major stumbling block. The delay was over a few paragraphs here and there – some legalese, and not money.
Just little stuff between lawyers,” said a person familiar with the proceedings.
Both Franklin and Rhoads signed for less than their predecessors, Al Borges and Will Muschamp.
Franklin’s contract is worth $280,000 annually and is guaranteed through 2009. Rhoads, who came from the University of Pittsburgh, signed for $305,000 annually, which is also guaranteed through 2009.
To compare, Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele makes $360,000 annually and offensive coordinator Jim McElwain makes $325,000.
