Session: What did taxpayers get for $600K?

By: Magnolia Tribune - August 6, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 8/6/8

State lawmakers have a right to feel a bit stunned that after meeting off and on for two months their efforts were for naught.

Here, after Gov. Haley Barbour called them into special session May 29 and kept calling them back and back again after they failed to find agreement on filling a $90 million deficit in the Medicaid budget, he says he doesn’t need them.

Here, after Barbour had inflamed fears that if lawmakers didn’t approve the tax on hospitals he advocated that he would be forced to slash funds for the program that serves 600,000 sick and elderly, he says, well, it’s not necessary after all.

Here, after the sessions Barbour called have cost taxpayers more than $607,872, he says, essentially, “never mind.”

So, what gives?
