State Rep. Danny Guice said Tuesday he is leaving the Legislature for a full-time position as a member of the state parole board and Gov. Haley Barbour will set a special election to fill the vacancy.
The appointment from Barbour comes just a few months after the Legislature repealed a law that would have prohibited Guice, a former parole officer, from getting the job because he had given Barbour too much in campaign contributions.
At the time the law was being changed, there was much talk that Guice was behind the move, but Guice and others at the time denied this was the case.
“I’m just looking forward to the new challenges,” Guice, R-Ocean Springs, said Tuesday.
Barbour will set a special election to fill the vacancy for the remainder of Guice’s four-year term, which began in January, according to a news release.
“As a dedicated public servant, both as a former corrections officer and longtime legislator, Danny has served his state with honor and strong leadership,” Barbour said in the release. “I commend Danny on his record of service and look forward to his continued good works as a member of this very important board.”
