The playbook Haley Barbour used to defeat then-Gov. Ronnie Musgrove in 2003 has now been passed to Roger Wicker of Tupelo.
The Republican Wicker, a former District 1 congressman who was appointed to the United States Senate late last year, used that playbook Thursday at the Neshoba County Fair.
“Now, five years ago, my friend Ronnie had run Mississippi into the ditch,” Wicker said at the annual political speakings at the Neshoba County Fair. “We had lost 38,000 jobs. Since then, we have gained 40,000 jobs.”
Wicker and Musgrove, a Democrat, are vying to complete the four years of the Senate term left vacant when Trent Lott stepped down unexpectedly last year.
