Football season has begun at Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Mississippi State had 103 players report for fall camp on Saturday. The Bulldogs’ players had a team meeting with fifth-year MSU coach Sylvester Croom and covered university policies as well as those related to the football program.

Ole Miss had its freshman class and walk-ons report on Saturday, with the veterans to follow today. The Rebels will have their first practice on Monday.

First-year Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt confirmed that five players from his first signing class would not enroll for the fall semester. They include running back Andre Sterling, wide receiver Randall Mackey, defensive back Hunter Miller, wide receiver Horatio Williams and quarterback Chris Wilkes.

The Rebels added junior college standout Patrick Trahan, a linebacker from Northwest Mississippi Community College, and defensive back Damareo Marr, another JUCO product, late last week.

“It’s great to see a player of (Trahan’s) athleticism, quickness and speed,” Nutt said.

Nutt, who spent the last 10 seasons in the Ozarks at Arkansas, noted one critical difference as the Rebels reported to campus.

“This is my first experience with this kind of heat, this kind of humidity,” he said. “This is real heat.”

The Rebels will have their first practice Monday.

Two Mississippi State freshmen, defensive lineman Trevor Stigers and quarterback Terrance Davis, are still waiting to hear from the NCAA Clearinghouse on their eligibility.
