City gas budget coming up short

With 2 1/2 months left in the fiscal year, Jackson City Council members must shift almost $1 million to the gasoline budget, or municipal operations might cease.

Rising gas prices have drained the city’s $3.1 million budget. In a meeting of the budget committee Monday, administrators told council members that immediate approval is needed to move the money from other budgets.

“We simply have to get some things done, and there is no way we can do it without fuel,” Chief Administrative Officer Robert Walker said.

City administrators propose moving money from the fuel reserve fund and unspent money from a variety of accounts to pay for gas for the rest of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.
