Effort paying off for Meridian QB – MSU

High school football players in Mississippi might want to check their cell phone messages around noon the next nine days.

If there’s a text from Meridian quarterback Tyler Russell, that’s a good thing.
“I know just about all the top-notch players in Mississippi, so they’ll definitely be hearing from me if they make the Dandy Dozen,” said Russell, who was contacted by Tupelo receiver Chad Bumphis and Louisville quarterback Clayton Moore soon after The Clarion-Ledger announced Russell as the third member of the 20th annual Dream Team. “It’s kind of a nail-biter seeing whether or not your name is called.”
Russell (6 feet 5, 205 pounds) was selected after quarterbacking the Wildcats (11-3) to the MHSAA Class 5A semifinals in 2007. He completed 146 of 274 passes for 2,481 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2007 despite missing 2 1/2 games with a bruised knee. He also ran for seven scores.
