Hancock supervisors moved ahead on the purchase of land for a new county complex Monday, the same day they learned that federal officials had agreed to pump millions in long-term recovery funds into the county.
It was a double dose of good news in the agonizing recovery of a county that was all but flattened by Hurricane Katrina nearly three years ago. The new county complex will replace a trailer city of offices located off Longfellow Road.
Supervisors authorized County Attorney Ronnie Artigues Jr. to negotiate closing a $1.7 million deal to buy nearly 10 acres of vacant land where the new complex is expected to be built. The property, owned by a group of investors, formerly housed a FEMA trailer park at the intersection of U.S. 90 and Drinkwater Boulevard.
