Former UCF hoops coach lands a college football job

A blast from the past came down from Birmingham, Ala., this afternoon.

And it came in the form of former Knights hoops coach Joe Dean Jr.

Dean, who built almost all of the team that Kirk Speraw took to the NCAA Tournament in Speraw’s first season as Knights coach, was appointed as the community relations director for the PapaJohns.com Bowl.
It should be an easy job for Dean, one of the classiest men in college athletics. He already lives in Birmingham; he’s athletic director at Birmingham-Southern. He knows every bigshot (and a lot of buck-shots) in town. He is highly respected and a smart businessman. He knows how to press the flesh. And, obviously, he gets along with people (including the media). It’s a good fit for both.
This season’s Papajohns.com Bowl (SEC vs. Big East) is set for Dec. 29 at Legion Field.
