Georgia tops inaugural ‘Football Fiasco’ poll

College football fans celebrated “Christmas in June” last week with the release of the preseason college football magazines.
Right idea, wrong holiday.
It’s more like Halloween. And more trick than treat.

So as you Dawg fans send thank-you notes to some guy named Lindy (picked Georgia No. 1), hate mail to Athlon and Phil Steele (both Florida lovers) and lobbying material to Street & Smith (still undecided, or at least undeclared), remember one thing about preseason polls.
They are a farce. Not one of these magazines picked LSU to win the title last summer. Not one chose Florida two years ago.
Even the Dawgs’ best friend, wise-old Lindy, went with Southern Cal in 2007 and Notre Dame in 2006.
Truth is, you can’t forecast college football in June. Or in August, as the coaches as well as the sportswriters who vote in the Associated Press poll do.
But in the interest of helping you pass the time on a sweltering Sunday, we here in the newsroom put together the inaugural “Football Fiasco” poll.
