State says goodbye to Polk
Mississippi State had the SEC’s only full-time baseball coach when Ron Polk left Georgia Southern to man the Bulldogs’ dugout for the 1976 season.

For the last decade or so, however, the league has clearly been the nation’s best college baseball conference.
Mississippi State will honor Polk in this weekend’s regular-season closing SEC series against Arkansas, which begins tonight instead of Friday because of next week’s SEC Tournament. Polk is stepping down after 29 seasons as the Bulldogs’ coach.
“I’m looking around our league, looking at the giant facilities, the salaries of coaches, the crowds in the stands,” said Kentucky coach John Cohen, who played for Polk at State. “You ask yourself the origins of this, and in my mind, it’s Ron Polk.”
