GOP beware: Dems wise up

Mississippi Republicans may well have lost their state Democratic Party poster boy for the wedge issue of voter identification on the same week that the U.S. Supreme Court seemingly paved the way for a legislative slam dunk on the issue by upholding Indiana’s tough voter ID law.

By a vote of 6-3, the high court ruled that states could require voters to produce photo identification without violating their constitutional rights. Attempts to enact such laws in the Deep South have historically been met with particularly strong opposition from civil rights advocates who claimed that such laws intimidate voters.

But in Mississippi – where our history of denying voting rights based solely on race is stark and undeniable – support for voter ID laws has always gotten a unintended boost from longtime Noxubee County Democratic political activist Ike Brown.
