JPD ex-chief may have worked for free

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 8, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 4/8/8

For nearly three months, former Jackson Police Chief Shirlene Anderson apparently has worked at City Hall without being on the payroll.

If the City Council approves a budget transfer today to fund Anderson’s newly created position, she will not get paid for those months.

The budget transfer of $39,188 would fund Anderson’s position as homeland security and emergency management coordinator from April 1 to Sept. 30, said Rick Hill, the city’s director of administration. The money is coming from surplus funds for the Thalia Mara Hall roof project.

After Sept. 30, Anderson’s annual salary of $65,311 would be moved to the new fiscal budget.

Hill said he is not sure why Anderson’s salary would not be retroactive.

Anderson made more than $114,000 annually as chief before being removed from the position by Mayor Frank Melton in November.
