MS Dems County party conventions set for Saturday

County party conventions set for Saturday

Democrats across Mississippi will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday for their county Democratic Party convention, the second step in helping shape the future of the Mississippi Democratic Party.

County convention delegates elected at precinct caucuses last month, along with other Democrats, will attend. While county conventions usually take place at county courthouses, the Mississippi Democratic Party urges anyone interested in attending and participating to contact their county Democratic Party chair for the exact location of the event and the time registration begins.

A list of county chairs and their contact information can be found on the state party Web site by clicking here.

“After such a huge turnout in the Tuesday Democratic primary, Mississippi Democrats can build on our momentum by participating in their county conventions,” said Wayne Dowdy, chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party.

“These events are the next step on the way to this year’s state convention this June in Jackson and, ultimately, the national convention this August in Denver. If you want to become involved in politics during an exciting election year, here’s your chance.”

On the agenda for the county conventions will be the election of members to serve on their county Democratic Party executive committee and the election of delegates to the congressional district convention and state convention.

Congressional district conventions follow in April and May. Delegates to those conventions will choose members to serve on the 80-member state party executive committee; they also will elect delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

Then, at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, delegates to the state party convention will meet in Jackson to elect the remaining members of the state executive committee; approve the state party platform; and elect at-large delegates to the national convention.

The site of the state convention will be announced soon.

“This is an exciting year for Democrats in Mississippi and across this nation as we work to reclaim the White House and set this nation on the right course,” Dowdy said. “Mississippians are an important part of this effort and we need their participation.”
