Bryant comes through on ethics

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 25, 2008

The Hattiesburg American, 2/25/8

Phil Bryant promised during his 2007 campaign for lieutenant governor to push for strong new ethics laws. Last week, he delivered on that promise when the Mississippi Senate passed sweeping changes that will increase ethical accountability for public officials.

The Senate, which passed the bill without a dissenting vote, has obviously gotten the message that the public expects transparency from its elected and appointed officials. The changes the legislation calls for would significantly enhance an environment of openness and accountability, ultimately to the benefit of both citizens and honest public officials.

A similar bill is working its way through the House. We hope the final product of both chambers is at least as substantive as what the Senate has approved.
