State Sen. Billy Hewes III on Tuesday was elected Senate president pro tem, the second highest position in that chamber.
Hewes, R-Gulfport, was praised by numerous other senators before being elected unanimously, by acclamation.
“This (pro tem) post has been referred to as the senators’ senator,” said Sen. Alan Nunnelee, R-Tupelo, who nominated Hewes for the position. “I can assure you Sen. Hewes meets that requirement.”
