JPD SWAT members deputized by McMillin
Malcolm McMillin, Hinds County sheriff and Jackson police chief, deputized 20 members of the Jackson Police Department SWAT team and hostage negotiations team Friday morning, giving them jurisdiction throughout Hinds County.
McMillin said he did it so the JPD officers can assist the 14 SWAT team members of the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department in emergency situations. Sheriff’s deputies already have jurisdiction throughout Jackson.
“These guys have worked together before,” McMillin said. “Any place that we can work together using the two departments, we’re going to do that.”
No pay raises come with the decision to deputize the officers.
“It’s just extending their jurisdiction and authority,” McMillin said.
