State officials said Thursday they will increase their oversight of $5 billion worth of programs designed to rebuild the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast, winning praise from advocacy groups and lawmakers eyeing recovery efforts.
A recent federal review found the state has not properly monitored some contractors, including Reznick, a Maryland-based company hired to manage a $3 billion grant program that helps homeowners flooded in Hurricane Katrina.
Mississippi Development Authority officials disagreed, though. They said that while they have not provided a formal, written plan required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, they have used various methods of monitoring Reznick and other companies.
