City again tries to fix budget shortfall

The Jackson City Council will attempt to fix a $3.2 million water and sewer revenue shortfall at a special meeting today and could authorize direct deposit of employee paychecks.

It would mark the first time in nearly a month the council has considered financial matters since learning of the deficit created when Mayor Frank Melton refused to sign into effect a water and sewer rate increase contained in the fiscal 2008 budget.

Money within the water and sewer budget dedicated to purchasing heavy equipment, water meters and professional services is being eyed to cure the shortfall.
