An agreement apparently has been forged that will head off any rules fight between the Democratic majority in the state Senate and newly elected Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant.
About 20 of the 28 Democrats elected to the 52-member Senate this year recently met with Bryant. Sen. Bob Dearing, D-Natchez, said most Democrats had agreed to support the current rules that will provide Bryant wide powers in overseeing the chamber, although Bryant’s party is in the minority.
“The Senate has a long history of bipartisanship,” Dearing said in a prepared statement. “Phil Bryant has assured us that he would appoint committee chairmen based on ability, and that he would include Democrats and Republicans, men and women, African-Americans and white persons, although he did plan to place his supporters in several key positions.”
