HA – Endorsement Summary

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 4, 2007

New state leaders to be chosen Tuesday

Governor: Republican Haley Barbour, 60, is the right choice to lead this state for another four years. He faces Democrat John Arthur Eaves Jr., 41.
Barbour has shown his leadership skills by leading Mississippi through recovery from Hurricane Katrina and has helped boost Mississippi’s economy.

Lieutenant governor: Phil Bryant, Republican, gets the nod over Democrat Jamie Franks. Bryant has served in the Legislature and as state auditor since his appointment in 1996.

Secretary of state: Delbert Hosemann received our endorsement. Hosemann, a Republican, faces former longtime legislator Rob Smith, a Democrat.

Attorney general: We believe Democrat Jim Hood is the best choice. Hood, who has served as the state chief law enforcement officer for four years, faces Republican Al Hopkins.

Treasurer: Tate Reeves, a Republican, is our choice to return for another four-year term. Reeves faces perennial candidate Shawn O’Hara of Hattiesburg, a Democrat.

Insurance commissioner: Gary Anderson gets our endorsement to replace George Dale, whom he defeated in the Democratic Party primary. Anderson faces Republican Mike Chaney.

Agriculture commissioner: Rickey Cole of Ovett is our choice. Cole, a Democrat, faces incumbent Republican Lester Spell.

Auditor: Republican Stacey Pickering gets our endorsement over Democrat Mike Sumrall.
