the 2007 race for governor in Mississippi, incumbent Republican Gov. Haley Barbour has set the campaign finance bar high.
In campaign finance reports reflecting his status as of Sept. 30 filed Wednesday with the secretary of state, Barbour reported $5.9 million in cash. He has raised $8.4 million and spent $6 million this calendar year.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Arthur Eaves Jr., a millionaire Madison attorney, reported $23,799 in cash. In this calendar year, Eaves raised $3.2 million and spent $2.5 million.
At the same point in the election in 2003 when Barbour was the challenger in his race against former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, Musgrove’s total for the year stood at $5.2 million while Barbour had raised $7.6 million.
