Bloomberg story on Barbour more than ‘election-year politics’

By: Magnolia Tribune - August 24, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 8/24/7

As expected, Gov. Haley Barbour shrugged off as “election-year politics” the detailed expose’ by Bloomberg News Service on how his relatives and his campaign have profited off Katrina recovery money.

He even conflated Bloomberg with the “liberal New York media,” ignoring that Bloomberg has long been respected as a leading business news service. It’s a good bet that in his Beltway days, Barbour courted Bloomberg to get favorable ink for his lobbying firm.

That Washington-based Bloomberg reporter Tim Burger pried deeply into Barbour’s dealings involving the $15 billion in Katrina relief that have poured into Mississippi came as a surprise to me. And an embarrassment that Mississippi journalism hadn’t broken the story.
